The best ChatGPT prompts (and why most prompt lists fail)

Most 'best ChatGPT prompts' lists are screenshots of one-liners that produce the same bland paragraph for everyone who pastes them. A prompt is only good when it carries context, a defined output shape, and a quality bar. This guide gives you prompts organised by the job you're doing, plus the pattern you can use to write your own.

What separates a good prompt from a bad one

A bad prompt names a topic. A good prompt names a role, the situation, one task, the exact output format, and what counts as good. The model is not short of ability — it is short of specifics.

  • Role: 'You are a direct-response copywriter who has written for skincare brands for ten years.'
  • Context: product, audience, price, objection, tone constraints.
  • Task: one verb, one quantity — 'write 12 subject lines'.
  • Format: table, bullet list, word count, reading level.
  • Bar: 'no hype words, no exclamation marks, each line under 45 characters.'

Best prompts for writing and content

Paste these, replace the bracketed parts, and run them twice — the second run is usually sharper because you'll tighten the context.

  • Act as an editor. Rewrite the text below to a 6th-grade reading level, cut 30% of the words, keep every specific number and name. Return the edit and a bullet list of what you cut. Text: [paste]
  • You are a content strategist for [audience]. Give me 20 article ideas that answer questions a buyer asks in the week before purchase. For each, give the title, the search intent in five words, and the one thing the article must prove.
  • Turn the transcript below into a 700-word article with an H1, four H2s, and a closing action step. Preserve the speaker's voice and any statistics exactly. Transcript: [paste]
  • Write 12 hooks for a short video about [topic]. Six should open with a contradiction, six with a specific number. Max 14 words each. No questions.

Best prompts for marketing and sales

  • You are a conversion copywriter. Write a 5-email sequence for [product] at [price] sold to [audience]. Email 1 problem, 2 mechanism, 3 proof, 4 objection handling, 5 deadline. Each under 180 words, one call to action per email.
  • Analyse the landing page copy below. List the three biggest reasons a first-time visitor would leave without buying, and rewrite the headline three ways to fix the largest one. Copy: [paste]
  • Write 15 cold outreach openers for [service] aimed at [role] at [company type]. Each must reference something specific and verifiable about their business, not flattery. Max 25 words.
  • Build a 30-day content calendar for [business]. Columns: date, platform, format, hook, call to action. Rotate three content pillars and never repeat a hook style twice in a row.

Best prompts for admin, research and operations

  • Summarise the document below into a one-page brief for a decision maker: the decision needed, three options with cost and risk, and your recommendation with reasoning. Document: [paste]
  • You are an operations consultant. Map the process I describe into numbered steps, flag every step a human must do, and mark the rest as automatable with the tool you'd use. Process: [describe]
  • Compare [option A] and [option B] for a business with [constraints]. Return a table with cost, time to implement, ongoing effort, and the situation where each wins. End with a one-line recommendation.

How to make any prompt reusable

Once a prompt produces something you'd send to a client, freeze it. Replace the specifics with bracketed variables, save it somewhere you can search, and give it a name that describes the job — not the tool.

A library of 40 tested prompts you actually reuse beats a bookmark folder of 400 you never open. That's the whole reason prompt packs exist: someone did the testing and the organising for you.

Frequently asked

Do these prompts work in Claude or Gemini too?+

Yes. The structure — role, context, task, format, bar — is model-agnostic. Output style differs slightly, but a well-specified prompt travels between models without edits.

Why does the same prompt give worse results for me?+

Almost always missing context. The model cannot see your product, price, audience or brand voice unless you paste them in. Add three sentences of context and quality jumps.

How long should a prompt be?+

As long as the context requires. Prompts that produce client-grade work are usually 100–250 words. One-line prompts produce one-line-quality output.
