How to start a digital product business in 30 days
A digital product business has three moving parts: something worth buying, a way to take money, and a reason for someone to show up. Everything else is decoration. Here is a 30-day sequence that gets all three live.
Week 1 — Choose the smallest product that solves a real problem
Your first product should be embarrassingly narrow. 'A pricing calculator for freelance photographers' beats 'a business course'. Narrow products are easier to write, easier to explain, and easier to sell.
Validate before you build: describe the product in one sentence to ten people in that niche and ask what they'd expect inside. If nobody has an opinion, the problem isn't painful enough.
Week 2 — Build the thing
Set a hard ceiling: five working days. Constraints prevent the most common failure mode, which is polishing forever.
Format matters less than organisation. A well-structured 40-page PDF outsells a chaotic 300-page one. Give every section a clear job and a clear outcome.
- Outline first, write second. The outline is the product.
- Include at least one thing the buyer can use in the first five minutes.
- Add a short 'start here' page — it dramatically reduces refunds.
Week 3 — Payments, delivery, and the sales page
You need three things live: a checkout that takes cards, an automatic delivery of the file after payment, and a page that explains the offer. Modern payment processors handle checkout, receipts, and tax collection for you.
The sales page follows a fixed order: the promise, who it's for, what's inside, what changes after you use it, objections answered, price, guarantee. A refund policy raises conversion more than it costs you in refunds.
Week 4 — Get in front of people
Pick one channel and give it thirty days of genuine effort before judging it. Splitting attention across five platforms produces five dead accounts.
- Short-form video — fastest reach for low-priced impulse products.
- Search content — slowest to start, but a good article keeps selling for years.
- Email list — highest conversion rate; build it from day one with a free sample.
- Affiliates — other people's audiences in exchange for a share of revenue.
What to do after the first ten sales
Ten sales tells you the offer works. Now interview the buyers. Ask what they almost didn't like, what they expected but didn't find, and what they'd pay for next. That conversation writes your second product and rewrites your sales page.
